Free Solo
Free solo climbing and free solo improvisation seem different, but they share some similarities: strong focus, breathing, and daring. Climbers ascend cliffs rope-free; improvisers perform without a score. Both take risks, making current decisions with significant outcomes. They find freedom in pushing boundaries. In my project, I’m exploring the contrasts and connections between these two worlds. By applying these concepts to my practice, I’m seeking the same sense of freedom found in free solo climbing.
Climbing has always been one of my favorite kinds of movement. However, what fascinates me about free solo climbing is not the physicality but the psychology. The mindset varies depending on the climber, but what all of them have in common is hyperfocus. That’s something relatable for me as a musician and is also the reason I decided to explore the connection between free solo climbing and music.
The multimedia project comprises video projection, electronics, movement, simple light design, and live performance. The audio material includes excerpts from online interviews with climbers Steph Davis, Hazel Findlay, Alex Honnold, Noah Kane, Magnus Midtbø, and Alain Robert. The climber featured in the video is Steph Davis, soloing the Diamond. The original video, titled Steph Davis: Diamond Free Solo, is available online.
